10 Turkeys in the Road ( Books Teachers Love )

Great news! Books Bloggers Love is now Books TEACHERS Love! We decided to target our audience a little more to bring you an even better experience with our group. We've also added two new members: Melissa from Mrs. Dailey's Classroom and Jillian from The Starr Spangled Planner! Please welcome them with a huge round of applause because we are so happy to have them.

Without further ado, let's get started on the book I've chosen for this month!

Crazy circus turkeys, a tired old farmer trying to get home, and engaging rhymes making this the perfect November read aloud. PLUS it includes counting back from 10 to 1 (or you know, decomposing numbers).
 My students absolutely love this silly book by Brenda Reeves Sturgis.
I really like this book because you don't find out the turkeys are circus turkeys until the end... which I won't ruin for you. It makes for great predictions of why the kids think the turkeys are dressed so silly.

Want to know what the turkey's are up to at the end of the story? You can find it here:

Obviously we will start by reading the book as a class. That's always a good place to start, right?

After we read the book for the first time, and before we talk about the book at all, I bring in a mini math and motor skills lesson.

Each student gets one "road map" of their choice and 10 little turkeys to color and cut out.

{ Grab the resource for free here }

I let them color and decorate the turkeys any way they want first. If they'd like to use the book as a reference, I'll let them. They will also get to color the "road map."

After coloring and cutting, we will do a mini-lesson on composing and decomposing numbers to 10. I'll probably even do a super mini-lesson on parts of a map.
Once we've had fun with this little activity, we will read the book again. This time we will use our little turkeys to help us better understand decomposing numbers in relation to the story.

Don't forget to stop by my friends' blogs to see what books they've chosen to read in November.
